Become a Priority in YOUR Life

As I sat on my front porch the day after Halloween, nursing a sugar hangover, I watched workers in and out, in and out of the house across the street. For several days now, they’ve been redoing, updating and constructing inside the house, and it’s because the owners are getting ready to sell.

It got me thinking: why do so many people wait until they’re selling their home to do the updates and changes they’ve always wanted? And it goes even deeper than that. When was the last time you got a haircut or waxed those brows? The only time I do is in preparation for a big event (like a close friend’s wedding or family Christmas gathering). When’s the last time you went to any sort of doctor for self-care instead of waiting until you were hurt or sick to make an appointment? When did you last finish a project that wasn’t benefiting someone else?

I’m sure a portion of the answer to ‘why we wait’ is procrastination or not wanting to shell out the money, but more than that, we live with an unrealistic idea that wanting to do something for ourselves is not a good enough reason. Instead, we wait until we can justify what we’re doing with an outside source. Once that outside source comes into play, we find a way to make it happen.

I’ve decided it’s important to make my number one source for getting something done, me. Because once I invest in the projects around my home–the place that I live and breath and make memories every single day–I won’t need to scramble to make my house into the home I’ve always wanted when people are coming over or I put it on the market. Because it will already be the home I made for myself.

Once I start going to the chiropractor or actually making six-month check-ups to see the dentist, I probably won’t need to make appointments due to declining health because I’m actually taking care of myself.

If I get my hair cut more often than every two years or an occasional pedicure more than the once-a-year major event in our lives, I may actually get to see the better version of myself more days than others do for once.

I am the most important piece of my life, because without me, there’s no life to live. Outside sources go on. Someone else lives in my house. Old friends reminisce at a wedding without me. Doctors see other patients. Everyone else’s life goes on without me. So why is my life and self-care centered around others? It shouldn’t be.

Despite what every parent tells their kids growing up, I am actually the center of my own universe, and you’re the center of yours. We truly need to start treating our bodies like temples, our minds like never-ending sources of knowledge, our homes like the place we live and utilizing the tools around us for the positive impact they can make. Until we start living for ourselves, we’re just spending our entire lives renovating our homes for someone else to move in. 

I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like the way I want to live. I want to be the best version of me. Period. Not the best version of me when I go in for an interview or around my kids or at my 10-year reunion. I want to be the best version of me for me. I deserve that. You deserve it too.

What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t?

Now go do it. While you’re at it, call to set up your yearly physical, get a haircut on the way and for God’s sake, find someone to fix that thing in your home that annoys the everliving fork out of you.

  1. Thank you so much for this reminder. I often wonder why I don’t do more for myself, and the reason is that there is no reason! I just have to do it!

  2. I will admit I have gotten a lot better about this!!! When my daughter was first born I was horrible about me time and doing things important to only me. A happy mom means everyone else is happy, so I do those things now and ignore the mom guilt.

  3. This is something I really struggle with, but it’s something I’m working on. It’s hard being in a new city with no support system, you get wrapped up in your kids and husband and home…. then BAM! Where’d mom go? lol

  4. Umm, I LOVE this and couldn’t agree more! I don’t feel guilty when I do something for myself lol – it makes me a better mom, wife and person! Running is something I do for me, it allows me to clear my head and get away.

  5. YES! My resolution for this year was #MoreMEin2016 and made self-care a priority. I swear it has made such a difference in how I feel.. I am never going back to neglecting myself!

  6. This couldn’t have been shared at a more perfect time. My focus in 2017 is going to be me. And I plan to be selfish and for once put myself before others. I’ll still be an amazing mom and wife but for the first time in years I plan to put myself first so that I can love myself a bit more.
