Sometimes It’s OK to be a “Bad Mom”

My children sleep in until at least 8 a.m. most weekdays. Being woken up too early is almost never an issue. In fact, the issue arises when my children must be somewhere before 8 a.m., and we (my husband or I) end up waking them up.

As fate would have it, the sleeping-in bliss only lasts during the week, when we don’t need or want it. As soon as 5 a.m. hits almost every Saturday morning, my 2-year-old is up and in our bed. How this only happens on the weekend baffles me to this day, but toddlers have a knack for finding the deep, dark pieces of life that we loath and bringing them to light–so I guess I’m really not that surprised.

This particular Saturday morning my husband and I stayed up late the night before and were exhausted. To put the cherry on top, my 2-year-old came slinking down the stairs at 4:45 a.m.–the perfect slap in the face. Too close to 5 a.m. to send him back up to bed and in the 4 a.m. realm, which makes any normal person want to hurl themseIf off a deck.

Bad Mom

So, I turned on a movie, which kept him occupied for a while, but then he got squirmy and whiney, and well, started acting like a baby who didn’t get enough sleep, as he was. Not long after, my other toddler came thumping down the stairs, into our bed and antagonizing her brother with every word that came out of her mouth. So, going on a couple hours of sleep, I blew a fuse.

I pulled them both out of our bed, forced them into the basement, grabbed a big bag of chips and applesauce pouches, turned on a movie and locked away all the remotes. I told them, in the sternest voice I have, that if I heard them I would end them, and I came back upstairs to climb into bed.

Of course, now I’m wide awake typing this, and no one’s won the morning battle. But the point is: every once in a while, it’s okay to be so over it or exhausted or just sick of doing the perfect parent thing day in and day out that you’re a “bad mom.”

P.S. I would like to thank the movie Bad Moms for the inspiration to let go a little, laugh at my chaos and buy wine before picking up my toddlers from daycare this week.

  1. Ugh, I thought I was the only one! During the week, my boys will sleep until around 7:30, but on the weekends, they’re up with the sun. Disney Jr. has been a babysitter on some rough weekends.

    1. Yes! What is with it on the weekends? I kid you not, both of our children woke up between 5-6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, but come this Monday and Tuesday, they both slept in until between 7:30-8 a.m.! Why?!

  2. I have definitely had days like this! I don’t often stay up late but I do have days I’m just dog tired. I think there is nothing wrong with that once in awhile! We all need a break!

  3. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to survive the day! I’ve been there many times. My kids are now tweens & teens and we’ve all survived thus far!

  4. Thanks for writing about what most of us parents do. Sometimes it is just about getting through the day. There is nothing wrong with giving ourselves a break every once in awhile.

  5. Ahhhhhh this was hubby and I this weekend… We’re were binge watching a tv show until who know what time & the next day was just misreble! My dauhter was wanting to play all day and all we wanted to do was sleep lol

  6. I can only be on my A game so often. Some days I need a day or two off and to just be me and if that means my kid gets more screen time or eats one too many goldfish then so be it.

  7. Why is it kids never sleep in on weekends or on vacation?! But they don’t want to get up during the week? Argh. You sound like you handled it… exactly how I would have. Thank goodness for Netflix. I read somewhere if you put on Dora you’ll sleep for 22 minutes. But if you teach them how to navigate to Dora on Netflix, you’ll sleep all morning. Genius!

    1. Yes–ha! Thank goodness my daughter knows how to navigate Netflix. Although, this time, on two hours of sleep, I just went straight to 1.5 hour movie and hid the remotes. Otherwise, my son would’ve gotten ahold of it and broke the t.v., or my daughter would’ve decided to put her bossy pants on and change the show just to tick of her brother!!

  8. Oh the struggle is real! On the days I have to be up and out of my house early to teach an early class are the days I’m practically dragging my daughter out of bed. But don’t you worry, if I can sleep in, like this morning, she’s in our bed by 5am jumping off the walls! And you’re damn straight, sometimes is IS OK to be a bad mom lol. I grabbed her tablet and was like here ya go! Mommy is going back to sleep for an hour !

  9. Mine have gotten way too much TV this week because I’ve gotten very little sleep, thanks to the youngest. He’s even kept the oldest up. I feel your pain!

  10. Guys who of you play Pokemon GO? Incredible game, yesterday i caught rare pokemon Gyarados using pokebusterbot !
